Acupuncture Services

Acupuncture is one of several therapies included in Chinese Medicine. According to Chinese Medicine theory, life is a dynamic process of maintaining balance, both internally among the systems of the body, mind and spirit, and externally between individuals and their environment.

Chinese Medicine includes a range of therapeutic modalities that can be used alone or in combination to promote balance and health of the whole person. Our team at CHEWHS will help you to create a practical, individualized treatment plan, which may include one or more of the following modalities:

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles at specific points on the body to stimulate the body’s ability to heal and rebalance. The number and placement of needles used in a given treatment session depends on the patient and the treatment protocol. A typical acupuncture session lasts between 20 and 40 minutes.

Our acupuncture needles are sterile, stainless steel, and made for single-use. They range from 0.25 inches to 3 inches long to 0.006 inches to 0.011 inches thick. Before insertion of the needle, the skin is locally sterilized with alcohol. Needles may be inserted freehand or with the aid of a plastic guide tube, using a number of different insertion techniques, such as spinning, flicking and gentle pulsing of the needle. Patients may feel sensations of numbness, distension or tingling at the needling site, which is called “De-Qi” and indicates that the correct point, depth and stimulation has been achieved.

Electro-Acupuncture / Electrical-Stimulation

Electro-stimulation involves the passing of electrical current between one or more pairs of acupuncture needles using an electrical stimulation machine. This treatment modality is especially helpful for treatment of pain.

Ear Seeds

Small seeds of the Vaccaria plant are placed on specific points of the ear and held in place with clear or flesh-toned adhesive tape to provide stimulation to these points over a longer period of time. The seeds may kept on the ear for a few days up to two weeks. Ear seeds may be used instead of or in conjunction with acupuncture and other modalities.

Cupping

Cupping creates local suction on the skin to increase circulation and aid in detoxification through the application of glass cups on the body.

Tui Na – Therapeutic Massage

Tui Na is a form of Chinese medical massage used to increase circulation and assist healing. The specific techniques and areas of the body massaged are determined through a thorough intake and consultation. This vigorous form of massage is traditionally applied over clothing and involves the use of little to no massage oils.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion involves the burning of mugwort herb close to the skin, near acupuncture points in order to warm and strengthen the body. While we do not perform moxibustion in the clinic due to some patients’ sensitivity to strong smells, we have moxibustion sticks available at the clinic and teach patients how to perform moxibustion themselves.

Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine may be prescribed to support healing and whole body wellness. If you are interested in using this modality, herbal medicine may be prescribed on your first visit or any follow-up visit. Powdered and tablet herbs from quality herb manufacturers are available for purchase at the clinic. Herbs in this form are safe, convenient and easy for patients to take. Some of the herbal formulas that we prescribe can only be obtained through a licensed acupuncturist, while others can be bought at retail stores without a license. For your convenience, we carry both types of herbs. For safety reasons, we can only sell herbs to patients who have received their herbal prescription from a licensed acupuncturist at our clinics.
