Summer Preceptorship 2015
This is a full-time 4 week experience intended for medical students to become familiar with the Chinese Hospital system and associated community physicians. It is an immersive experience for students to be exposed to the broad range of medical and surgical subspecialties available to them in their future careers.
The 4 week session will be open for two UCSF students to participate in. The session will start after classes end in mid-June, or in mid-July, depending on the schedule of both students and physician preceptors.
There is a $2,400 stipend given to cover rent and living expenses during this time, which will be distributed to each participating student at the end of the experience. Since Chinese Hospital is associated with UCSF there is no need for you to register for the summer, so no extra fees. Below is a short description of the experience:
Chinese Hospital was established more than 115 years ago and has continuously served the Chinese community of San Francisco. Its mission is to provide affordable quality healthcare to monolingual Cantonese and Mandarin speaking patients in a culturally sensitive manner. It offers both medical and surgical services, ICU, 24 hour Treatment Room facilities and four satellite clinics. The Chinese Hospital system continues to grow: There is currently a new Chinese Hospital building under construction which will consist of 54 acute care beds, 22 skilled nursing beds, new surgical suites and a new Treatment Center (Emergency Room).
Chinese Community Health Care Association, our Physicians Group, has over 180 active physician members covering all subspecialties and most practice in close proximity to the Hospital.
Chinese Community Health Plan our HMO was created in 1986 and has grown to approximately 50,000 covered lives. The health plan played a significant role in the recent Affordable Care Act (Obama Care) and continues to grow. Since CCHP also serves as a third party administrator for additional HMOs, CCHP provides culturally competent affordable health care to its constituents.
The preceptorship will be of 4 weeks duration. The student will spend 2 weeks each in Surgical and Medical services. Part of the day will be spent in the hospital rotating through surgery, ICU, Radiology, Laboratory and medical wards with assigned preceptors. In the afternoon, students will have the opportunity to observe office practice in a variety of primary care (Family Practice, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine) and specialty (both medical and surgical) settings.
At the end of the preceptorship the student will have an improved understanding of the culturally-relevant healthcare available in the San Francisco Chinese Community. Students will be exposed to a variety of specialties and practice settings that may provide a stimulus to their own career path.
