Press release Contacts: PJ Johnston, Chinese Hospital, (415) 731-3304 CHINESE HOSPITAL, BROWN & TOLAND REACH MUTUAL AGREEMENT SAN FRANCISCO - Chinese Hospital, which has provided culturally competent care to San Francisco's immigrant community for more than a century, has reached an amicable agreement with Brown & Toland Medical Group. San Francisco's last independent private hospital, Chinese Hospital, and a medical group, Brown & Toland, have agreed to work together and allow qualified doctors to provide clinical care to both organizations. A lawsuit brought forward by the hospital, its affiliates and San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera has been settled on mutually beneficial terms as a result of the agreement. "We believe Brown & Toland appreciates the special role we serve to the city, particularly to San Francisco's immigrant community," said Chinese Hospital CEO Brenda Yee, "and we look forward to an excellent working relationship that should benefit everybody: doctors, health care organizations and, most importantly, patients." Under the agreement, doctors who are members of the Chinese Community Health Care Association (CCHCA), which is part of Chinese Hospital's integrated delivery system, will have the ability to serve patients through both CCHCA and Brown & Toland. "We are pleased that physicians who are members of both CCHCA and Brown & Toland are able to continue to work on behalf of the Chinese Hospital system, and that Brown & Toland physicians would be able to continue to serve our community as consultants of CCHCA, which has been a long and beneficial working relationship," said Dr. Eric Leung, president of the CCHCA. CCHCA is comprised of more than 170 physicians in 45 specialties, and cares for more than 27,000 patients - most through Chinese Hospital. Brown & Toland expressed enthusiasm for the future as well. "Brown & Toland recognizes the uniqueness of the Chinese healthcare organizations and the special services and value that they bring to the Chinese community," said Brown & Toland President and Chairman of the Board, Lin Ho, M.D., and Chief Executive Officer Gloria Austin in a joint statement. "As an integrated system including a health plan, hospital and medical group, the Chinese health care organizations provide care to many monolingual patients and are the only insurance option for many local employers." Yee applauded the community support behind Chinese Hospital. "The real winner here is San Francisco's immigrant community, which needs and deserves high-quality, culturally competent medical care," she said. "We'd also like to thank Brown & Toland for staying at the table and seeing this thing through. We believe our pooled resources and expertise, our top-notch physicians and the increased efficiency gained through this partnership will be a great benefit for all." Initially formed as California Pacific Medical Group (CPMG) in 1993 as an independent practice association, Brown & Toland was created in 1997 with the merger of CPMG and physicians affiliated with the University of California - San Francisco. Brown & Toland comprises more than 1,500 physician members who serve approximately 190,000 patients enrolled in health maintenance organizations and approximately 70,000 patients in preferred provider organization plans. Chinese Hospital, located on Jackson Street in San Francisco's Chinatown, has provided access to health care services for the Chinese community since 1899. It is the last remaining independent private hospital in San Francisco, and boasts the highest percentage of care provided to Medicare- and MediCal-eligible San Francisco residents of any hospital in the City, apart from San Francisco General Hospital. Chinese Hospital Association, Chinese Community Health Care Association and Chinese Community Health Plan form the Chinese Hospital Health System (CHHS), which exists to deliver quality health care in a cost-effective manner, is responsive to the community's ethnic and cultural uniqueness, and is accessible to all socioeconomic levels. ###
