Frequently Asked Questions about Severe Acute Respitory System (SARS)

What is SARS?

SARS is an illness caused by a new virus. There is currently no treatment or vaccine for SARS.

How do I know if I have SARS?

Currently there is no test for SARS. In order to be considered as a SARS case, you must have ALL 3 of the following conditions:

  • Have traveled within the past 10 days to an area where there has been transmission of SARS, OR had close contact with someone suspected of having SARS,
  • AND have a documented fever >100.4°F (38°C),
  • AND have a cough, difficulty breathing, or pneumonia seen in a chest x-ray.

What should I do if I think I have SARS?

If you meet ALL 3 conditions listed above, call your doctor or clinic. To help them make a diagnosis, tell them about any recent travel history or any close contact with anyone with similar symptoms. Cover your mouth and nose with tissue or wear a mask when coughing or sneezing.

How do we stop the spread of SARS?

It is possible that SARS may be spread through environmental routes, such as contact with contaminated surfaces (like door knobs and table tops). Careful hand washing and general disinfections of soiled surfaces are important ways to stop the spread of SARS.

For other questions, or concerns, contact your local health department.
