Chinese Hospital Mission

Chinese Hospital is governed by a voluntary Board of Trustees, broadly representative of the community, and strives to assume a leadership role in all health matters.

History

Old Chinese Hospital photo

Chinese Hospital is a unique healthcare provider with a long and rich history of providing access to culturally competent health care services for the Chinese Community. In 1900, the Tung Wah Dispensary opened in San Francisco's Chinatown. In 1923, Dispensary services had outgrown its space when fifteen community organizations (listed below) created the Chinese Hospital Association, a new non-profit public benefit corporation. The Board of Trustees raised funds for the construction of a new facility at 835 Jackson Street, which was opened in October 1925. In the mid-1970s, health care services had outgrown this facility when the Board of Trustees conducted extensive fund raising for the construction of a the new facility at 845 Jackson Street. Today the Hospital maintains a licensed bed capacity of 54 beds.

Chinese Hospital Foundation

The Foundation's mission is to raise funds to acquire state-of-the-art equipment and facilities to maintain quality healthcare for the Chinese Community. For further information on how you can be of help to the Chinese Hospital Foundation please call Ms. Karen Chow at (415) 677-2490, or e-mail at karenc@chasf.org.

Ways of Giving to the Foundation

There are many ways of giving to the Foundation that can accommodate your tax planning and estate situation. All contributions to the foundation are tax deductible to the extent allowed by the law.

Cash Contributions - A gift of cash may be the simplest and most convenient way to make a contribution. Whether as a memorial for a dear friend, in honor of a person or event (i.e. birthday, wedding, anniversary)  or in support of a Foundation project to purchase equipment or facilities, your gift will be gratefully received and appreciated.

Real Estate - A gift of real estate that has grown in value since you purchased it provides the same tax advantage as cash and possibly more. As an example, you may give a remainder interest in your residence to the Foundation while retaining the right to live there for your lifetime. You receive the income tax deduction in the year that the deed is executed and eliminate any gift tax or estate tax on the property.

Bequests - In your will a bequest to the Foundation can provide very important support to the Hospital while reducing or even eliminating estate tax liability. You can grant the Foundation a specific amount of cash, a readily marketable property, or name the Foundation as a residuary beneficiary of your estate. Several types of charitable trusts may also be created by your will.
